Roost by Michael Channing

Roost

by Michael Channing

a loud and lonesome bird
has built its nest in my heart
it wakes me at night
to complain of the cold
"at least you have some place to roost"
i tell it, "now quiet
and let me sleep"
"at least you're not alone"
it says
then flutters its wings
and sings its lovely song
