Among the Ashes, a poem by Michael Channing

Among the Ashes

by Michael Channing

one layer at a time the sky collapses
till a dark gold ring surrounds the earth
i sit in my car the heater on
imagining all cities burning at once
in glorious matrimony
i watch it blaze till the fire is eaten
by the grey veil of the traffic-lit sky
release the brake
homeward bound
able to accept the dark door of your eyes
now that everything is just as cold and dim
as my heart among the ashes

Cold Fire
