From Chains

Michael Channing

there’s a crow in the window
black as my dreams
there’s a tree in the wind
nightly it screams
there’s a stone in my heart
a mouth in my veins
it swallowed the love
the poison remains

and i fall
back
into my cell
and i fall
back
into myself
and i hang
from chains
and i hang
from chains

there's a hound in the moonlight
aware of my blood
a skeletal crew
on the dark rising flood
the darkness thickens
just after dawn
the waves of regret
carry me on

and i fall
back
into my cell
and i fall
back
into myself
and i hang
from chains
and i hang
from chains

there’s a man around the corner
walking too slow
a machine in the sky
knows what i know
the rain seeps under the door
it followed me home
but i’m not home anymore

‘cause i fell
back
into my cell
yes i fell
back
into myself
and i hang
from chains
i hang
