Foundation from If These Walls Could Hit Back by Michael Channing

you’ll find me in the walls
sluicing through the pipes
underneath the floorboards
hanging in the hall
in the dark and sweaty basement
where i hid from judgment
and if only for a moment
thought nothing at all

tear down the roof
break past the timbers
raze the whole structure
reduce it to splinters
but the pain will linger
the foundation remembers

scrape me from the doors
dig me from the earth
sift me from the glass shards
sweep me from the floors
in the choked and boiling attic
where i fought the rising panic
the waves of crashing static
and prayed to hear no more

tear down the roof
break past the timbers
raze the whole structure
reduce it to embers
but the pain will linger
the foundation remembers
