As I Wade Back Out Into the Shallow End of the World

let me recall the weight
of bursting lungs as they filled with water and regret
the fiery panic
of starving limbs as they thrashed against the embrace
pulling me in

let me also remember
the joy of floating upright
as far from the ground as from the sky
equal to the kelp and leviathan
in god’s briny eye
