Back Then

Michael Channing

every tangent touch
is love when you're young
every winking eye the center of a storm
every written word
must move the world
every poem burns to keep you warm

back then
you were alive and no one knew
back then
you were alone and no one cared
and though the face you wore was brave
the empty war you tried to wage
fell through
and you were scared

every hopeful dream
is the future when you're young
though many tell you dreaming is a waste
you watch the future
through rose-colored eyes
anywhere is better than this place
anywhere but here
as anyone but you

back then
you were alive and no one knew
back then
you were alone and no one cared
and though the face you wore was brave
the empty war you tried to wage
fell through
and now you're here
